These days, it seems every time you turn around, you’re seeing or hearing something about home organization. I’m talking: Marie Condo, The Home Edit, The Neat Method, the list goes on. Well I’m here to tell you, I have recently jumped on the Home Organization train as well. Organization and decluttering is one of my favorite home “pastimes.” If you haven’t watched “Get Organized” on Netflix yet, I highly suggest binge watching one night! The series is all about expert organizers Clea & Joanna. Clea and Joanna, together, are the home organization dream team. They will declutter every inch of your house. Their friendship and bubbly personalities will make you smile and inspire you to Get Organized.
The number one rule of home organization is that every item needs to have a home. This way, when you put an item back, you know where it needs to go. Also, you know when you’ve run out or are running low on any home staples. This week, I’m going through several home organization purchases. Little by little, I have been reorganizing and decluttering my home. I am going to share all purchases, tips and tricks on the blog as I go. Let’s get organizing!
I’m starting my home organization process in our mud room. Mostly, because this is the room that needs the most decluttering (the “drop zone” if you will). You walk in from a long day and the minute you step foot inside, the shoes come off, the keys and glasses get thrown on the first table you see, and the bag goes down to the floor. I’m sure I’m not the only one…and in our home, we are hit with a DOUBLE WHAMMY (hehe to that word). Our pantry is in the mud room!! Another area of the home where items just get tossed! So, some items I’m going through today are pantry related as well.
You may remember, a few weeks back I posted several Spring Home Refresh Items. Just to follow up on this post, I did purchase the White Nordic Storage Baskets from the Container Store. These baskets come in a small, medium, and large sizes. I ordered the large size and they’re perfect for small appliances like our waffle maker, coffee grinder, milk frother, etc. I actually just ordered three more to place on our bottom shelf for items like our lunch boxes, paper plates & utensils. At $8.48 a basket, I felt they were an excellent option for the pantry. I also ordered the Marie Kondo Modular Glass Containers. I have to say, these containers truly do spark joy! We use these containers for oatmeal, coconut flakes, mixed nuts and trail mix. The containers keep a tight seal which keeps the items fresh and look much better on the shelf than an open package.
Ziplock baggies, aluminum foil, and parchment paper are also items that always seem to get tossed in the pantry. I purchased this Box Organizer from Target to help solve that problem. Instead of tossing your garbage bags on a random shelf, try placing them on the back of the pantry door with this Garbage Bag Storage Container.
Now, getting into the mud room. I purchased this Shoe Rack. It’s mini and probably only fits about six pairs of shoes, but it’s perfect for when you’re running out the door quickly or in our case, when we’re just throwing on shoes to take Franklin out. One of our cabinets is dedicated to towels, pool supplies and sunscreen. You can put the sunscreen in this White Plastic Storage Bin. This way, if you have a sunscreen spill, you can easily bring this bin over to the kitchen sink and wash it out. Lastly, I have drawer organizers not only in this room, but in rooms all over the house. Like I said before, the number one rule is that everything needs to have a home! I mean everything! So I keep even the smallest items in these drawer organizers. The container store has Deep Drawer Organizers as well as Shallow Drawer Organizers depending on what you need.
Have a coat closet in your entryway? Pick up these Linen Drawer Organizers for items like hats, scarves and gloves. Most families share the coat closet. So, separate coats by family member with these Closet Dividers which make it easier when you’re going to look for your coat!
Let me know what I should organize next! I really had fun with this one :). I will keep you all posted on my home organization journey.
