Matt and I are away this week with our friends Kelsey and Tyler! Traveling and packing for this trip got me totally inspired to write this post. This week’s post is going to be short and sweet and right to the point. I wanted to share a few tips and tricks I’ve picked up over the past few years on how to make your travel easier and luggage lighter.
- create a “place” for each item – Just like with home organization, every item in your suitcase should have a place. Packing cubes are great for clothing items, a small electronic organizer for your phone cords and a sunglass case to keep your sunglasses protected.
- put your outfits together before you leave – Get an idea of what you’re wearing by putting everything together and snapping a picture. This not only saves you time on vacay, but also helps you only bring the essentials and not bring anything you don’t need.
- bring a pillow on the plane – most airlines allow a pillow on the plane. grab one with a zip case and tuck some small clothing items in there to reduce the weight of your checked bag!
- keep your small liquids in your plane carry on – If it’s under 3.4 ounces, most planes allow it in your bag. Liquid toiletries can be heavy. So, this also reduces the weight of your bag. Grab one of these large, clear makeup bags.
- pack a snack – save yourself from an unhealthy meal at the airport and bring a snack.
- photocopy important documents – make copies or take pictures of your passport, bring extra copies of your passport photo, driver’s license, flight and hotel info. If you for any reason forget your ID or passport, I’ve heard a copy is acceptable.
- bring your reusable water bottle – leave it empty and fill it once you get through security to save on water.
- Roll (don’t fold) clothing – steam anything that’s wrinkled before you pack. Once your clothing items are steamed, roll them and pack them. Rolling prevents wrinkles and leaves more space in your luggage.
- wear your heaviest pair of shoes – another way to lighten the bag. Wear your socks, too! Don’t forget you’re taking your shoes off going through security.
- create a packing list about a week before – create a list of what you need to pack and check off items from the list as you go. This helps prevent the last minute rush the night before travel. I’m leaving my list (and Archie’s) below!
